IRVING, Texas – After leading the WKU men’s track and field team to a second-place finish at the 2017 Conference USA Indoor Championship meet, senior Ventavius Sears has been tabbed the C-USA Men’s Field Performer of the Meet. Sears brought home both the long jump and triple jump titles from last weekend’s meet.
Sears collected the Men’s High Point Scorer of the Meet award for the second-consecutive season as well. The Columbus, Georgia, native recorded 29 of WKU’s 100 points in the squad’s runner-up finish. Sears is the fourth different Hilltopper to collect either the Sun Belt or Conference USA Indoor Top Point Scorer Award and the first to repeat as the honoree.
Joining Sears as 2017 C-USA Indoor Performers of the Meet are UTEP’s Michael Saruni garnering the Track Performer of the Meet, while on the women’s side Charlotte’s Victoria Merriweather earned Field and Katie Jensen of Rice took home the Women’s Track Performer of the Meet nod.
Sears’ honor marks the first time in school history that a Hilltopper has won a C-USA Track Performer of the Meet since the award’s inception in 2015.
This season marked the fourth-consecutive year Sears was an all-conference performer in the long jump (25’2.5”), winning the title the past two seasons. His mark ranks fourth in WKU program history. The triple jump crown marks the second for Sears in as many years as well; covering the fifth-longest distance in program history at 50’6.25”.
