FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Selected to compete in the inaugural National Invitational
Softball Championship, WKU Softball is headed to the Atlanta, Georgia,
regional where Alabama State, Kennesaw State, UT Martin and Georgia State will also
compete. The double-elimination postseason regional is slated for Tuesday, May 16
through Thursday, May 18.
WKU’s first opponent on the Georgia State campus will be Alabama State (21-33) out
of the SWAC. Game time is set for noon CT on Tuesday. A victory would put the
Hilltoppers back in action right away with a 3 p.m. CT contest against Kennesaw
State (36-18). With a loss versus Alabama State, the Red and White would drop into
the loser’s bracket and await the loser of the Georgia State (34-23) – UT Martin
(38-18) tilt for an 11 a.m. CT contest on Wednesday.
The Hilltoppers met regional host, Georgia State, twice during the season’s opening
weekend in Starkville, Mississippi, where the Panthers came away with a pair of
decisions that the Red and White squad is looking to avenge. WKU is 5-5 all-time
with this season’s results against Georgia State and 2-2 when meeting the Panthers
Alabama State and WKU have met twice in program history with the Hilltoppers owning
both prior meetings. The Red and White took the first contest 16-8 in five innings,
and a day later, the second game 9-0 again in five innings during the 2015 campaign
in Troy, Alabama.
WKU and Kennesaw State have met once in program history, as the Hilltoppers claimed
a 9-3 victory at KSU. Additionally, WKU owns an 8-4 all-time record against UT
The Hilltoppers received a selection to the NISC based on their National RPI ranking
in the top-100.
The 15 Automatic Qualifiers are the teams with the best regular-season record in
their respective conferences that are not playing in the 64-team NCAA Tournament.
Six of these teams finished first in their conference for the regular season
(Liberty, Iona, Illinois State, IUPUI, Ohio and Weber State). The seven National
RPI selections all ranked in the top 100 nationally; at-large teams were selected
off their body of work. Of the 26 participants, 17 of the teams selected won 30 or
more games this season.
Regional hosts are Pacific, Weber State, Illinois State, Lamar, Georgia State and
Liberty. Each double-elimination regional concludes play Thursday, May 18; the
six-team Championship Round, also double elimination, will run May 21-24 at a host
site to be determined.
