BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — As part of an exciting Homecoming on The Hill, the WKU men’s basketball team will host an open scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Hilltoppers’ scrimmage, which will take place immediately before the WKU football program’s Homecoming clash against Old Dominion at 6 p.m., is free to the public.
Doors at Diddle Arena will open at 3 p.m. Parking is free in Parking Structure 1 (PS1), or fans can utilize their regular parking passes for home football games.
The scrimmage is expected to last about two hours, leading directly into the football game at Houchens-Smith Stadium.
While WKU’s annual basketball tipoff event – Hilltopper Hysteria, presented by Hughes Supply this Friday, Oct. 14 at Diddle Arena – will offer fans a sneak peek of the upcoming season, the Hilltoppers’ open scrimmage will present an extended look at what’s in store for the 2016-17 campaign.
WKU opens its schedule Nov. 1 with a home exhibition against Campbellsville, while the regular-season opener will be Nov. 12 at home against Alabama State.
The Hilltoppers return just 31 percent of their scoring, 39 percent of their rebounding and 14 percent of their assists, but they welcome many new faces to the roster this season, including immediate-impact graduate transfer guards Que Johnson, Junior Lomomba and Pancake Thomas.
They also return junior forward Justin Johnson and two other seniors, forwards Ben Lawson and Anton Waters, and add the services of Tennessee transfer forward Willie Carmichael, a redshirt sophomore.
The squad will take its guidance from first-year coach Rick Stansbury, who boasts 293 victories and a career home winning percentage of better than 80 percent in his 14 years at the helm at Mississippi State.
The Hilltoppers are 573-162 all-time at Diddle Arena and are one of the nation’s most storied programs. WKU ranks third in NCAA history in regular-season league titles (42), seventh in 20-win seasons (43), ninth in all-time winning percentage (.663) and is tied for 16th in all-time wins (1,737).
