IRVING, Texas — WKU Track and Field’s Ventavius Sears was named the Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. In just the second week of honors awarded, Sears is the first Hilltopper of 2017 to pick up a weekly accolade after claiming both the long jump and triple jump event crowns at the Commodore Invite last weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.
Sears, who notched a career-best long jump mark of 7.78m at the Commodore Invite, registered a pair of third-best all-time marks in program history for both jumps – long jump and triple jump (15.63m) over the weekend.
His long jump mark currently sits as third-best in the nation while ranking 12th-best in triple jump. Sears’ long jump and triple jump tallies from the weekend sit atop the Conference USA charts.
Over the weekend, Sears also ran the second leg of the victorious 4x400m relay team. Sears, joined by Emmanuel Dasor, Julius Morris and Maor Seged, ran a season-best 3:09.17 to take the relay title.
This honor marks the third career C-USA indoor athlete of the week accolade collected by Sears, with all three coming in the month of January (2015, ’16, ’17).
The Columbus, Georgia, native picked up both individual crowns against stout competition over the weekend, in a 20-team field that included eight SEC squads. In total, the Hilltoppers produced eight top-eight finishes from the Multipurpose Facility on the Vanderbilt campus.
WKU Track and Field will return to Vanderbilt on Friday for the Vanderbilt Invitational, another two-day event hosted by the Commodores in Nashville. The Hilltoppers will see several more SEC squads along with more Conference USA teams at the upcoming competition.
