BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With two weeks to prepare for its second Conference USA
opponent of the season, the WKU offense hit Feix Field on Tuesday evening with a
determination to execute, especially in red zone opportunities. In their previous
game against Ball State, the Hilltoppers scored touchdowns in only 3-of-7 trips
inside the 20, and offensive coordinator Junior Adams explained how the team has
focused on that aspect.
“In the red zone it’s about us, and that’s one thing we were stressing during the
BYE week to ‘Better Your Execution,’” he said. “We have to have 60 minutes of
execution and 11 guys doing their jobs, and part of that is in the red zone.”
Quarterback Mike White felt confident that extra time spent on those situations in a
rare Monday practice will help going forward.
“Normally on Monday we’re all still sore from the game on Saturday, but coming off a
bye week we were able to get work in,” the senior said. “I think whenever we can get
everybody on the same page – especially in the red zone because that’s where you
score your points – and rep those things out, it’s good.”
Specifically talking about their upcoming opponent, UTEP, the Hilltoppers mentioned
that they will face something in the Miners’ defense that WKU has not so far this
season.
“They run a 3-4 and we haven’t seen a 3-4 yet, so that will be something challenging
for us to figure out how we’re going to block that up, run scheme and run gap,”
White said. “They have some very good players and they start games very well, so we
have to start fast and we have to execute. I think if we go out there and execute
the coaches’ game plan we should be okay.”
“They’re going to come with multiple pressures and we have to do a good job in
protection of identifying the pressures,” Adams added.
