BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With its third-consecutive automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, WKU Volleyball is headed to Stanford, California, to open NCAA postseason play, the NCAA announced Sunday night during its Selection Show. Joining the Lady Toppers at the Stanford host site are Boise State and Denver. First round matches will take place at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 2. Saturday’s match is slated for 9 p.m. CT.
In 2016, WKU Volleyball is making its 10th overall program appearance, including its eighth automatic bid into The Dance. Currently riding a 21-match win streak, the Lady Toppers enter NCAA action with a 30-2 overall record after winning their third-consecutive Conference USA Tournament title. WKU has held strong in the AVCA rankings at No. 20 for the past three weeks and also owns an RPI rating of 15.
The Lady Topper volleyball program under the guidance of head coach Travis Hudson has now appeared in the NCAA Tournament six of the past seven seasons. WKU has achieved 30 or more victories in five of those six seasons.
Friday’s match will mark the first meeting between WKU and Boise State and is Boise State’s first NCAA appearance.
In 2016, Boise State has put together a 25-6 overall record and went 16-2 in the Mountain West Conference, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. WKU and Boise State did not have any common opponent during the 2016 campaign.
With a victory over Boise State, WKU would advance to face the winner of the No. 6 seed Stanford and Denver match in the second round on NCAA action from Maples Pavilion. The Lady Toppers are 16-5 all-time against Denver with the most recent meeting taking place in 2011. WKU is 0-2 all-time against Stanford, crossing paths in 2004 and then again in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Both WKU Volleyball’s and Hudson’s first win in the NCAA Tournament came at Stanford during the 2012 tournament. The Lady Toppers took down Loyola Marymount in the opening round before facing second-seeded Stanford.
First and second round play of the 2016 NCAA Tournament will take place either Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1 and 2, or Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3. In total, 16 campuses will host the opening rounds of The Dance before the field narrows to just four non-predetermined hosts the following week. The NCAA Semifinals and Finals will take place in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 17.
