BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU continued preparations on Wednesday for another Conference USA East Division showdown as the Hilltoppers (6-3, 4-1 C-USA) prepare to host FIU (3-6, 3-2 C-USA) on Saturday from Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Saturday’s Military Appreciation Day Game can be viewed nationally on beIN Sports, one of the league’s newest broadcast partners. Matt Martucci, Brett Romberg and Jordan Daigle have the call.
For defensive coordinator Nick Holt, the re-emergence of his defense in recent weeks has come at an opportune time as the Hilltoppers make a run at another division title. Of concern for the defense, FIU quarterback Alex McGough.
“He knows where to go with the ball, very accurate,” Holt said. “He’s been well-schooled and knows his offense. He has guys who are good football players who can do something with the ball after they catch it. Their run game is really good too.”
WKU boasts the league’s top scoring defense and rushing defense, a hallmark of Holt-coached defenses.
“You’ve got to stop something on defense, and it really starts with the run game,” Holt added. “It’s really Football 101. You have to be good in the run game and have good solid pass coverage. The last few weeks we’ve been really good at the fundamentals.”
