BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football hit the Feix Field turf Friday for the first of
four team practices before heading south for the 2017 AutoNation Cure Bowl. The
Hilltoppers and Georgia State are set to square off Saturday, Dec. 16 in Camping
World Stadium for a 1:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
“We saw today kind of took a little bit of time to get the rust off and get back
into game mode,” quarterback Mike White said. “But I think we have good senior
leadership and good coaching to make sure we’re on the right track.”
Although WKU has not played in two weeks, it has been a busy fortnight for White.
The graduate senior accepted an invite to the 2018 Reese’s SeniorBowl on Dec. 1, then was named to the All-Conference USASecond Team – for the second-consecutive season – on Dec. 5, with the “Selection Sunday” announcement of the postseason opportunity in-between.
“When we found out we were going down to Orlando for the Cure Bowl, we all got
really excited because we’re going to warmer weather – it’s a great bowl destination
– and we would have one more chance to show what this senior class is about,” White
said. “We want to go out on top as winners, holding up another trophy.”
The success of this WKU senior class is well-documented, with three bowl victories
(2014 Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, 2015 Miami Beach Bowl and 2016 Boca Raton Bowl) and
back-to-back Conference USA championships in 2015 and 2016. In order to claim an
unprecedented fourth bowl title, WKU faces the challenge of the 6-5 Panthers, who
White and the Hilltoppers began scouting the day their 13th opponent was announced.
“They’re a good football team. I think they’re well-coached, they’re never out of
position, they have some good athletes on the field,” he said. “But I think there
are some things we can do successfully if we go out there with the right mindset.
“We’ve been pretty lucky these past couple years. We’ve held up a lot of trophies
and we’re going down to Orlando with a mindset to hold up one more.”
