BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Moka Ito, one of Japan’s top junior players, has signed her
letter of intent and will join the Lady Topper Tennis program this fall.
The highest-ranked Universal Tennis Rankings (UTR) player to sign with the Lady
Toppers under head coach Jonatan Berhane, the reigning Conference USA Women’s Tennis
Coach of the Year, Ito defeated Julia Vulpio this year – one of France’s top juniors
– as well as Kanae Hisami who has ranked as high at 393 in the Women’s Tennis
For her efforts, Ito received scholarship offers from across the nation, including
from schools in Power 5 leagues, before ultimately choosing to develop her game
under Berhane’s tutelage.
“Moka is a very motivated player,” Berhane said. “She wants to develop her game and
see how far she can reach. I believe she will make a big impact to this year’s
Ito will join the Lady Toppers this fall, a squad which returns five players from
last year’s highly successful 2016-17 team. Last season, Berhane coached the Lady
Toppers to their first win over rival Middle Tennessee since 1989, saw them advance
to their first-ever semifinals match in a conference tournament and owned a .706
regular season winning percentage – the best since 2001. The Sweden native guided
WKU to a 13-6 overall record, which tied for the sixth-most wins in school history.
