BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Baseball looks for its second consecutive series win Feb. 24-26 with a three-game series against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Jacksonville State at Nick Denes Field. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday contests begin at 3 p.m., 1 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The season started off with a bang for the Hilltoppers when Kaleb Duckworth and Thomas Peter each hit a game-winning homerun in back-to-back victories vs. Valparaiso. Following back-to-back losses, WKU owns a 2-2 record with the Gamecocks coming to town for the first time in program history.
WKU and JSU have faced off only four times: once in 1977 and again in 2016, when the Hilltoppers visited Choccolocco Park for an early-season series and came up short in three hard-fought, one-run contests. The Hilltoppers are 2-0 in one-run games so far in 2017, and should face another tough early-season test with the Gamecocks being preseason OVC favorites.
The Hilltoppers are likely to throw the trio of Ryan Thurston, Cody Coll and Paul Kirkpatrick again this weekend, although probable starters are officially TBA at this time. JSU, meanwhile, could respond with Garrett Farmer, Colton Pate and Derrick Adams, who helped the Gamecocks start the season 2-1 at Conference USA foe FIU in games played Feb. 17-19 in Miami.
Senior catcher Hunter Wood leads WKU with a .400 batting average, and has knocked at least one hit in all four games thus far. Wood came through with a pinch-hit, RBI double in the seventh inning at Belmont on Wednesday to keep a five-game hitting streak alive, which dates back to the final game of 2016. Following up from his Opening Day blast, Duckworth sent his second homerun of the season through four contests; he leads the Hilltoppers with a .667 slugging percentage.
