Monroe County left a mark on the All “A” Classic Girls’ State Tournament by scratching defending champion Murray from the bracket Friday morning. The Lady Falcons held off the Lady Tigers, 60-57, at Frankfort Civic Center to advance to a semifinal game Saturday at 11 a.m. central time.
Monroe had four players score in double figures, led by Kelsey Johnson with 16 points. Reagan Turner added 14, Ashley Gearlds added 13 and Ashlee McGeorge posted 12 points.
The Lady Falcons entered the fourth quarter with a 44-43 lead and held off each Lady Tigers rally to advance.
Turner give Monroe its biggest lead in the final period with a steal that led to a pair of made free throws with. Her team led 53-47 with 4:02 to play in the game.
Murray responded with an 8-3 run to get within one point, 56-55, with 1:50 left in the fourth period.
Johnson made 3 out of 4 free throws in the final 40 seconds and Lauren Hammer blocked a shot attempt by Macey Turley to push Monroe’s lead back to three points, 60-57, with 19 seconds to play. Gearlds sealed the Lady Falcons’ win with a steal with nine seconds to go.
Monroe plays Trimble County Saturday morning. Trimble beat West Carter, 43-27, on Friday. The Lady Falcons improved to 20-2. AP Top 10 Murray fell to 17-4.
