RICHMOND, Ky. — In less than two seasons, WKU’s Mary Joiner has etched her name into
the Lady Topper Golf record book.
The sophomore sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Saturday to win
the individual title at Eastern Kentucky’s Colonel Classic, notching her fourth
career victory and her second in the last three events.
Joiner’s four individual titles in less than two seasons are already a program record.
“The win was really something special,” Joiner said. “To go into a playoff and pull
it out was super exciting, and having all my teammates there cheering me on made it
even more amazing. I’m really looking forward to conference and seeing all that this
team can do.”
Joiner entered the day with a two-stroke lead, but found herself tied with Akron’s
Danielle Nicholson after the final round with an even-par 144 (70-74) total at the
University Club at Arlington.
They headed to hole No. 10 to break the stalemate, and Joiner made a downhill putt
breaking right to left for birdie to claim the victory.
Joiner also won the individual title this month at the Spring Break Shootout and
finished third at the UNF Collegiate. She was named Conference USA Women’s Golfer of
the Week for both efforts.
The Franklin, Ky., native also won two tournaments in fall 2016 as a freshman.
Joiner led the EKU tournament in par-4 scoring at 2 under and also tied for the
tourney lead with 30 total pars.
As a team, WKU finished third with a two-round total of 596 (297-299) and fell just
one stroke shy of Eastern Kentucky and Xavier at 595.
“I’m proud of how Mary battled this week,” WKU head coach Adam Gary said. “The
weather conditions were tough, but she stayed patient. It’s disappointing to lose
the team competition by one, but I feel like we are saving the best for last.”
Senior Katie Story (74-76) and sophomore Bailey Tyree (76-74) both tied for ninth at
150. That tied Tyree’s best result of her career.
Senior Georgina Blackman registered her seventh top-20 performance of the season at
152 (77-75), and freshman Megan Clarke tied for 35th at 155 (77-78).
Freshman Caroline Cavin tied for 31st – her best career finish – at 154 (79-75)
competing as an individual, while sophomore Abigail Smee tied for 53rd at 158
The tournament was WKU’s last of the regular season. The Lady Toppers will compete
in the Conference USA Championship on April 16-18 in Fort Myers, Fla.
