BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Hilltopper Basketball will be seeded eighth in next week’s 2017 C-USA Men’s Basketball Championship presented by MetroPCS, and the Hilltoppers will open play against ninth-seeded UTSA at 11:30 a.m. CT Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.
The opening-round game will be streamed online by Campus Insiders from Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
WKU (15-16 overall, 9-9 C-USA) finished the season with two straight wins, including a 79-72 victory over Rice on Saturday’s Senior Night.
The winner of the WKU-UTSA game will face top-seeded Middle Tennessee at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals Thursday on American Sports Network. The semifinals of the tournament are scheduled for Friday on CBS Sports Network, while the championship game will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11 and air on CBS Sports Network.
WKU beat UTSA 81-66 in the teams’ only meeting this season on Jan. 28 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Justin Johnson led the Hilltoppers with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
That win was WKU head coach Rick Stansbury’s first career game against the Roadrunners (13-18, 8-10). The Hilltoppers are 3-0 all-time against UTSA.
WKU has advanced to the semifinals of its league tournament in 11 of the last 12 seasons, including a run to the 2016 Conference USA Tournament semifinals. Last season, the eighth-seeded Hilltoppers upset No. 1 seed UAB in the quarterfinals before falling to Old Dominion in the semis.
The Hilltoppers are 21-5 overall with four championships in their last nine conference tournaments.
