FRISCO, Texas — A WKU Football trio flew south on Wednesday to represent the
Hilltoppers for the 2019 Conference USA Media Kickoff. Head coach Tyson Helton will
be joined by senior wide receiver Lucky Jackson and junior safety Devon Key.
The event today will take place at The Star, which is the Dallas Cowboys’
World Headquarters and just down the road from C-USA’s main offices. WKU and the

and an evening outing at Pinstack Plano, which features bowling and arcade games. An
annual tradition for the Red and White travel party is a lunch trip to Hard Eight
BBQ for some authentic Texas eats.
Helton returns to The Hill three years removed from the 2015 football season which
ended with WKU’s final Associated Press ranking of 24 – the highest in school
history – and a school-record 12 victories, including the first-ever FBS conference
His tenure coincided with quarterback Brandon Doughty’s astronomical ascension up
the NCAA’s career record book and total rewriting of the Hilltopper program’s own
offensive records. Two of Helton’s quarterback protégés were selected in the 2018
NFL Draft: USC’s Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall selection by the New York Jets
and WKU’s Mike White in the fifth round by the Dallas Cowboys.
A back-to-back C-USA Honorable Mention wideout, Jackson has 115 receptions for 1,547
yards and nine touchdowns in his three-year career on The Hill. In 2018, the
Lexington native had a career-high 50 catches and four scores, as well as 552 yards
to lead the WKU offense.
Jackson tallied multiple receptions and 20-plus yards while playing in 12 contests
for the third-straight season. He notched a career-high eight catches on Sept. 22 at
Ball State and a career-high two scores on Sept. 8 vs. Maine; he also had a
season-high 115 yards against the Black Bears. Jackson also added an 18-yard
touchdown rush on Nov. 24 at Louisiana Tech.
Key was a C-USA Honorable Mention selection last year after earning an All-Freshman
Team nod in 2017. After redshirting in 2016, the Lexington native has started 24
games for the Hilltoppers over the past two seasons, racking up 165 tackles in the
process. In 2018, Key tied for the lead among WKU defensive backs with 71 tackles
and three interceptions, while also adding three tackles for loss and six pass
He had a 45-yard interception return for touchdown on Sept. 8 vs. Maine in the first
quarter to put WKU ahead by a score of 14-0, only 103 seconds into the game. Key
also recorded interceptions in each of the final two games of the campaign, on Nov.
17 vs. UTEP and on Nov. 24 at Louisiana Tech.
