The No. 1 team in the Fourth Region opens the regional tournament Sunday against one of the two teams to beat them this season.
Monroe County, winner of the Girls’ 15th District Tournament and 21 straight games, last lost Dec. 23, 69-59, to Bowling Green. The Lady Falcons drew the 14th District runners-up Lady Purples in the first game of the Girls’ Fourth Region Tournament. They tip at 3 p.m. Sunday inside E.A. Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
Coaches, athletic directors and media members gathered in the library at Warren East High School on Friday morning to draw the bracket for the tournament that begins this Sunday with a pair of first round games and continues until Sunday, March 5, with the championship game.
Monroe (29-2) and Bowling Green (21-8) play the opening game Sunday, followed by Metcalfe County (17-15), which won the 16th District, and 13th District runner up Russellville (11-19) at 5 p.m. the same day.
On Monday, 13th District winner Franklin-Simpson (15-15) plays 16th District runner up Russell County (23-8) at 6 p.m., followed by 14th District winner South Warren (21-8) and 15th District runner up Barren County (20-12) at 8 p.m.
The tournament’s semifinal games will be Friday, March 3, at 6 and 8 p.m. and the championship will be Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m. All games are at Diddle Arena.
