The Barren County girls’ golf team advanced to Day 2 of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac KHSAA State Golf Tournament by shooting team total 345 on Day 1 of the event Tuesday.
Jill Florence led the way for the squad with an individual round of 4-over 76, which left her in 11th after the opening round at Bowling Green Country Club. The Barren County squad reached the state tournament for the third consecutive year – twice as regional champions – and advanced to the second round for the first time.
The tournament resumed Wednesday morning. Lilly Shipley led BC back to the course with a 9:21 a.m. tee time.
Sacred Heart led the event after Round 1 with a team-total 315. Regionally, Green County was tied for third with a 337. Gracie Parrott led the Lady Dragons with a 1-over 73 and was tied for third as an individual.
Faith Martin of South Warren was two strokes behind Florence at 78 and tied for 14th.
After Florence for Barren, MiKayla Wyatt shot 79, Cortney Withrow fired 90, Karleigh Delk shot 100 and Shipley finished with a Day 1 109.
In other rounds of regional interest, Shelby Darnell of Madisonville-North Hopkins was tied for 18th, Sarah Hinton of Elizabethtown was 22nd, Sarah Beth Hundley of Elizabethtown was tied for 23rd and Sydney Durrant of Greenwood was tied for 53rd. They all made the cut to continue play Wednesday.
Glasgow’s Katie Jones missed the cut by posting a 92. She was playing as an individual.
Sarah McDowell of Murray and Ke’Asha Phillips of Owensboro were leading the tournament as individuals after Day 1. Each fired 1-under 71.
