Whitney Creech named C-USA Freshman of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Freshman guard Whitney Creech has been named the C-USA Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday morning, WKU’s first Freshman of the Week honor since the 2014-15 campaign.

Creech excelled this week in just her ninth and 10th games on The Hill, helping to push the Lady Toppers to victories over Lipscomb (87-35) and College of Charleston (89-76). Across the two games, Creech averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and four assists while knocking down 60 percent (12-of-20) of her shots from the field.

The Jenkins, Ky., native approached triple-double territory against the Bisons on Thursday evening, playing a career-best 32 minutes while logging 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the win. Creech also came away with a steal in the contest and contributed to a strong defensive effort by the Lady Toppers; WKU held Lipscomb to just two first-half points, setting the all-time record in NCAA women’s basketball and also allowing the fewest in men’s basketball since the introduction of the shot clock.

On Sunday against College of Charleston, Creech’s confidence continued to grow as she connected on seven of 10 shots, including a pair of critical baskets early in the fourth quarter to stymie the Cougars’ comeback attempt. The freshman finished the afternoon with a career-best 17 points and four rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.

Creech is WKU’s second C-USA honoree this season after teammate Tashia Brown earned Player of the Week honors on Nov. 21. She is also WKU’s first C-USA Freshman of the Week recipient since Tashia Brown claimed the same honor on March 2, 2015. Creech was the leading high school scorer in the nation in each of the last two seasons, averaging 42 points per game as a junior in 2014-15 before tallying 50.3 per outing as a senior last year.

WKU will return to action on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. inside E.A. Diddle Arena for its final non-conference matchup of the season as the Lady Toppers host Ball State. The Cardinals defeated WKU, 74-60, in the most recent meeting between the two sides last season.
